Arcadi Volodos was born in Leningrad, Russia, on February 24, 1972. He was born to parents who were both talented singers and he followed in their footsteps by studying voice at an early age. He attended Capilla M. Glinka School and the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he also studied conducting.

At the age of eight years old, he began to play the piano but it wasn’t his top musical passion, at that point. He began to take his piano playing more seriously in 1987, at the age of fifteen years old. He began his formal study of the piano at the Moscow Conservatory, and then continued his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris and the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia.

Arcadi Volodos had an innate gift for playing the piano and began to show his superior talents fairly rapidly. Many pianists study for a much longer period of time that he did and still not advance to the level that he reached relatively easily. He began to be recognized as a rare and extraordinary talent. He refused to enter contests, however, as he was philosophically opposed to musical competition.

A serendipitous private performance for a Sony Classical label was arranged by a friend of his. That performance propelled him into the spotlight where he was then offered a lengthy exclusive contract by the Sony executive.

His musical abilities are said to contain passion, color, imagination and superb technique. Some have said that his talent is of the “once in a lifetime” caliber. His technical skills have been touted as flawless.

He has made multiple award-winning CD’s and these recordings have received rave reviews. He has been compared to the legendary Russian musician, Vladimir Horowitz. Horowitz has been called one of the most talented pianists of the entire twentieth century. It is reported that Horowitz was often paid bread, butter and chocolate rather than money for his performances during times of Russian economic hardship.

Volodos has worked with some of the world’s most famous orchestras and conductors, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, London Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, the Boston Philharmonic and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. His Carnegie Hall debut recital was recorded and released as a Sony CD in 1997 and it received a multitude of awards across the globe.

In a 2003, a classical music columnist in an American newspaper interviewed Volodos. He was described as short, stocky with thick, wavy dark hair. He is reportedly interested in electronic gadgets as a hobby but that the piano is his great love. His alleged secret to his spectacular performance is that he feels that listening is more important than playing. He develops a sound image in his mind and tries to incorporate it into his music. It looks like he’s doing an excellent job.
