Does rock music have an evil component to it?

“Stick it to the man” is what Jack Black says rock is all about. Is there more to it? To me, rock is about rebellion against an unworthy or unjust authority. It could be against a school, a boss, and many target God. It seems to me that some of the best music out there kicks God’s ass. Nirvana, AC/DC, some Stones, some Led Zeppelin and the list goes on. What are your thoughts?
True, rock is about unwed sex but it is also about every other taboo thing in our culture.
I am saying it has a component of evil. I am not saying it is all evil.

Your question’s inherently contradictory: Rebellion against an unworthy or unjust authority is not inherently evil. Jesus, Buddha, Galileo, Gandhi, Sophie Scholl, and Bobby Sands all did that, and they’re some of the best examples of goodness that are possible.

That aside… a lot of rock music does address religion. As I type this, I have the lyrics to The Rolling Stones’ ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ (actually the OPPOSITE of Satanic, amusingly enough re. the kneejerk protesters that have never read the lyrics), and XTC’s ‘Dear God’ (not anti-the concept of a deity, but anti-religious hypocrisy) running through my head. Popular music expresses frustrations of all sorts–social, political, sexual, philosophical, theological, what have you. It’s an outlet. And, as an outlet, it allows people to say things they wouldn’t otherwise say.

To me, having an outlet is not just necessary; it is good. So rock music, used properly as an outlet, is pretty much good, not evil at all. The only bad part of it is, as a previous poster said, when it is used for corporate or otherwise phony ends, because then a tool of social expression becomes a tool of social control. That, in my book, is evil.
