Why are Gregorian Chants such hauntingly enchanting sounds?

I am not catholic, not even “religious”, and I grew up on classic rock, yet I find Gregorian Chants extraordinarily mesmerizing and irresistible. …What gives Gregorian Chants their movingly entrancing quality? …Any ideas? I Hope I have listed this under the appropriate category, not sure if it should have been “psychology” or “music”!

I think it is a combination of the three reasons already cited:

We have an image of monastic life as peaceful and untroubled, something which we associate closely with monastic music.

Particularly, the “modes” used in church music (i.e. Gregorian chant) represent a much older musical tradition, giving the music a feeling of timelessness.

In the reverberant spaces of medieval church buildings the sound reflects in such a way that the patterns of vibration interact and reinforce each other producing a beautifully layered sound which although not “pure” in the technical sense, sounds pure to the human ear.
