Rush defines that perfectly. It means you do not follow the curriculum of the genre that is most popular. (In my personal belief) You are not in the Limelight trying to soak up the fame. You are somewhat secluded and staying out of the media because you don’t get publicly intoxicated, get arrested for drug possession or disturbing the peace.
Example: 70′s. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc.
Rush did not sound like these guys. They created their own sound. Which in fact worked. Because today, surprisingly, they are getting mainstream according to blogs.
