Roadtrips are fantastic things. I have been on a proper one myself, as I consider a roadtrip to be defined as the journey from one country to the other, passing though many different countries on the way. My roadtrip was to Antibes in the south of France. From London we crossed the English channel by ferry in a big Vauxhall Zafira, going via France, Belguim (very straight roads), Holland (very relaxed country), Switzerland (incredible views from the mountainous roads), and then back into France again down to the coast.

I suppose what is great is the control you have when on a road trip – if there is a road you can get there. Complete freedom. What is also great are those quiet moments for some reflection and contemplation of life’s pasts and futures, while staring out to never seen before scenery.

I was reminded of the beauty of the road trip when watching Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s fantastic documentary the Long Way Round. Setting off in London in April 2004, Ewan and Charley travelled through some of the most beautiful, and at times dangerous, terrain the world has to offer. Crossing over into mainland Europe, they rode through France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada before arriving
115 days later at their final destination, New York City, USA. Some incredible countries with vastly different cultures. What made thisprogramme all the more interesting was the emotional journey that the two charming men went through to get to New York and the difficulties they faced and overcame, despite quite a bloated support team a few miles behind them. It was an inspiration and something I would love to try and achieve in some capacity in the future.
