We Love Any Kind of Music

What happened to the golden age of Rock?

Back in the day, (late 60′s early 70′s) the world saw the best group of artists imaginable. Jimi Hendrix forever changed the world of blues and soul, The doors broke on through to the other side with amazing performances (most of them) and music. Other groups created clasics like House of the Rising Sun (Animals), anything by Santana, and the list goes on and on. Today, everythign sounds alike, or just plain bad. Not to be overly critical, but now we have GANSTA rap about murder and money, absent minded meaningles pop songs that encourage vanity and product use. Emo and Punk make children at the age of thirteen think that their lives are horrible and to rebel against any authority figure mindlessly and without reason. it could just be me, but I think the golden age of music alltogether has come and gone and all were left with is the remnents. Feedback?

The other day I ventured out to buy the first CD I decided to buy in a
very long time. After driving around for a while… it hit me: there
really aren’t any music stores any more. I remember when I was
younger, there were several record stores in my small town alone. On
the main road to the city… they were all gone. In the big mall,
where there used to be at least two of them, there was only one left.
The store I found didn’t have the CD I wanted so I was left with
Wal-Mart and K-Mart. No luck. Then I remembered that BOOK stores have
music now. The big book store I had to drive to had the biggest
selection by far but still… no luck.

That “Video Killed the Radio Star” Mtv premier was indeed prophetic.
It was the beginning of people growing up WATCHING music. Instrumental
prowess is a thing of the past. No more posters of guitar players on
teenagers’ walls. The music I see youth and not-so-youth listening to
is generally all rhythm, devoid of harmony and melody except for the
singer. The musicians at concerts are just backdrop… might as well
just push a button to play the “music” and watch the singer dance. I
don’t mind rhythmic music, but what I think of as interesting rhythmic
interaction is a bit more colorful than what greets my ears in day to
day life.

The industry has driven itself into the toilet. It has pushed the
concept of homogenized formulized capitalized contractualized bands so
far that genuine art is professional suicide. There IS good music
being made by good musicians but it isn’t being played and it can’t be
purchased in stores. The only local radio I can stand to listen to are
the stations that play the “oldies” (70′s rock). For a while, radio
played longer carefully constructed pieces that sometimes carried a
theme through a whole album. Now we feed our kids Ritalin and babysit
them with reality TV (someone here pointed out that Mtv doesn’t even
play music videos any more – they cashed it in and drove it into the
ground.) I could go on endlessly about Clearchannel.

Out of high school I gave up plans of a music career because I had
hopes for a family, I saw where the industry was heading, and didn’t
want them to go hungry. In retrospect I regret the decision because I
wound up with neither. My local music scene is absolutely nonexistent
except for summertime when I get the privilege of blowing $100 in
order to take a girl to a concert (thank you Clearchannel.) The bands
aren’t here, the musicians aren’t here, and the kids don’t seem to
have any interest in learning an instrument (possibly because they’ve
never been exposed to one.) I’m constantly offering friends with kids
free music lessons to their offspring with few takers.

The music industry is always busy shooting itself in the foot, suing
everyone they can. It gets to me that they are now busy getting all
the guitar tab off the net so no one will be able to play music any
more. If I were in the position of the government or the music
industry, I would subsidize music programs, new artists, lessons,
instruments…. I never thought it would get this bad.

– Helpless Musician

I’m out at last
Boy, the world sure looks different
Wow… there’s hardly anything fun to do
Since they made music illegal
But I’m hooked I got the habit
I got to have it
I need to play
But theres no musicians anymore
They’re all gone

Wait!
I’ve got it!
I’ll be sullen and withdrawn
I’ll dwindle off into the twilight realm
Of my own secret thoughts
I’ll walk through the parking lot
In a semi-catatonic state
And dream of guitar notes
To go with the loading-zone announcements.
