Los Angeles Philharmonic Tickets – Welcomes New Conductor for 2009-2010

Like any other year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s spring season is just as strong as ever before. Yet this year marks a first for the California based orchestra, as they are under new direction. Gustavo Dudamel recently took over the reins of the Los Angeles Philharmonic after being introduced just twice. As the Los Angeles Times blog reports, sometimes finding a new conductor is based on “love at first sight,” as in the past international conductors have been chosen after only a few meetings.

The Disney Hall based orchestra first caught a glimpse of this Venezuelan conductor during his work with the Gothenburg Symphony, and couldn’t take the chance of letting him go. Recently extending his contract into the 2015-2016 season, musical director Dudamel will continue to showcase the “marvels” of both the City of Angels and its stars. Dudamel took over the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the fall, an experience he compares to something like “a delicious cocktail,” reports The Los Angeles Times. While he still serves as principal conductor for the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, a role he’s held since 2006, Dudamel has already strengthened his newest home. Pushing his Latin influences onto the 2009-2010 season, the company is currently celebrating the current “Americans and Americans” Festival, a project the Spanish-speaking native helped helm.

Dudamel isn’t just bringing a new effervescence to the stage, but also welcoming a global expertise. For the first time in many, many years the Los Angeles Philharmonic will venture to the east and back west with a global tour; performing staples like John Adams’ “City Noir” and Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1″, the orchestra will premiere their sound at their home venue before hitting cities around the country.

What’s more is this young conductor – only 28 years of age and part of the Venezuelan program El Sistema that engages students in musical and orchestral training – has helped make his former program huge. As its most famous alum, the program now reaches 400,000 students in the world’s most dangerous country, a place where 70 percent of the families participating fall below poverty lines.

With such global roots, the Los Angeles Philharmonic had a humble beginning. It was founded in 1919 by millionaire William Andrews Clark, Jr., an amateur musician who hired on Walter Henry Rothwell for performances at downtown’s Trinity Auditorium. The company eventually moved to the Temple, holding its activities in conjunction with the venue’s church services. In 1945 the Phil replaced the Hollywood Bowl Symphony as the headliners for the Hollywood Bowl’s summer series, establishing the Phil as one of the world’s leading companies. European conductors began taking over the Los Angeles Philharmonic with the lengthiest tenure from 1978-1984 by Carlo Maria Giulini, who brought classical music into the company’s repertoire.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic moved again in 1964 to the Dorothy Chandler Music Pavilion, sharing the stage with the Civic Light Opera Association, among others. Like the Boston Pops, the Los Angeles Philharmonic established two separate concert series – one for the winter and one for the summer – with the creation of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra with John Mauceri as the musical director. In 2003 the Los Angeles Philharmonic was given a permanent home in the Walt Disney Hall, a titanium, stainless steel building that stands out in the Los Angeles cityscape.
