In your opinion, what year exactly did hip hop music start to decline in terms of talent, content and quality?
I am referring to mainstream HIp Hop.
Around 2003. Some decent albums have come out since then, but only from artists that were already established. In my opinion rap was best in the late 90′s, with the last albums of 2pac and Biggie, Nas and Jay-z coming out with their best albums, Eminem starting up with the Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP, and the emergence of other great rappers like Mos Def. Rap slowly declined but was still good between 2000-2003, and in my opinion the sharp decline started with the popularity of 50 Cent, and later T.I. and Lil Wayne. Not saying that they’re the worst rappers, but the type of rap they do and help make popular in my opinion is partly responsible for the inexcusable success of people like DJ Khaled, T-Pain, and Soulja Boy.
