Using symbol-based techniques, hip hop music videos conveyed ideas, stereotypes and role models related to the black America, which words alone could not justify through sound and record sales.

PUBLIC ENEMY – FIGHT THE POWER (1989)

Public Enemy, a highly-politicized hip-hop group, used their music to express their interest in the concerns of the African Americans in the 80s. The group released the video of “Fight The Power” in 1989, making the song an all time classic hip hop anthem. Communicating a revolutionary anger for the suffering of black America in the 90s, Fight The Power” video was released in a vital period in America’s struggle with racism apprehending both the psychological and social conflicts of the time.

THE ROOTS – WHAT THEY DO (1996)

“What They Do” is a parody of literally meaningless stereotypes communicated through a richly produced video. Sex, money and upper class lifestyle are fakely introduced in the background set of “What They Do”, while The Roots rhyme softly, almost effortlessly describing the decadence of the 90s. The song reached #34 in BillBoard Album Charts although The Roots used the alternative and risky way of parody to express their opposition to the deterioration of the values of life.

To my view, “What They Do” is the epitome of the black culture, thoughts, beliefs and trends reaching #. Definitely, one of the videos that impacted significantly the way hip hop evolved in the later years.

EMINEM – THE REAL SLIM SHADY (2000)

Eminem is widely regarded as a white invader in the hip hop word, using more swearing and slung language than creative rhyming and socially acceptably views. Blurring the line between reality and parody in a seemingly effortless way, Eminem annoys and insults but he has an undeniably vivid imagination, weird humor and liberal anger in equal abandon. The release of “The Real Slim Shady” video is an all time classic in the modern hip hop music video industry as Eminem breaks through the hardcore gansta rap using parody, and verbal might. The video features with vigor and venom Dr. Dre, Mel-Man, Fre Durst and D12, while Eminem is dressed like Britney while attending the Grammy Awards. “The Real Slim Shady”won the MTV Award for Best Video and Best Male Video.

I work as a financial and investment advisor but my passion is writing, music and photography. Writing mostly about finance, business and music, being an amateur photographer and a professional dj, I am inspired from life.

Being a strong advocate of simplicity in life, I love my family, my partner and all the people that have stood by me with or without knowing. And I hope that someday, human nature will cease to be greedy and demanding realizing that the more we have the more we want and the more we satisfy our needs the more needs we create. And this is so needless after all.
