Rap/Hip-hop: The black face minstrel show of the 21st century?
Rappers put on a kind of ghetto boy “black face” act on television and on the radio to entertain whites and blacks. They’re putting on masks of black stereotypes for money, just like how it was done in the 1930′s. Most rappers i see and read about are actually quite intelligent. I saw a rapper on Bill Maher and i was surprised at how knowledgeable he was, but if i saw a music video of him i might have seen the usual black stereotypes that whites and blacks love to see. We need a positive black role model. When was the last time you saw documentary about a black man that WASN’T about sports? Other then “Malcolm X” i can’t think of one. Come on guys, you’re better then this. Discuss.
Jimmy Page is top ten of the greatest guitarists of all time…
anyways, i totally agree with you. most of this mainstream crap is minstrel show rap. they all rap about the same stuff like how much money they got, some stupid dance or about doin a girl.
its ok to have some of that stuff but we also need artist with a more positive message. there is no balance. the minstrel show rap (Soulja Boy) is overwhelmingly in the mainstream. but artists with a positive message and not so materialistic (Mos Def) doesnt get any shine, when they should.
there isnt any substance in the music. nowadays a artists is more focused on a hot single than the album. thats why CD sales are down but ring tone sales are up.
the music was better in the 90s
