hip hop music chords
Does anyone else hate the direction mainstream pop music has gone in even more so than 10 – 20 years ago?
I realize pop music has been going downhill since the 80s, and it was only ten years ago that we were all ragging on the boy bands. But as a musician/songwriter, I was always able to look beyond the image and appreciate the musical elements in backstreet boys tunes such as the creative use of chord changes, melodic structure, and harmonies (though it was always the songwriter I was praising and not the group). This club music or whatever the hell it’s called that has taken over this past decade really makes me ashamed to be a member of this generation. I really think the intelligence level of each generation is getting dumber and dumber. Mind you, I am not against rap and hip hop – the 90s had great rappers who were actually talented (2pac, Biggie Smalls, Dre, Snoop), but this new stuff is always just one hook (usually no more than 2 chords) repeated over and over and over, and the lyrical content is always “drunk up in the club” or some stupid sh*t. When is this trend gonna die?
God, i hope the trend is going to end soon. I have never really been a fan of mainstream pop, although i agree with you that some has been at least creative or has displayed talent. Pop music now seems so simplistic and sooooo overproduced…..synth, drum machine, pro-tools and a half-assed singer. Ugh…The trend, fortunately, does go in cycles…and seemed at its nadir 2-3 years ago. i have noticed over the last year or so that the top album list in billboard is starting to include less pop and more substantial music. lets hope the worst is behind us for awhile. Anyone who denies the cyclical nature of this should try to remember what the charts looked like in the late 80s right before the grunge revolution hit (shudders).
