It would be wrong to say we wouldn’t have country music without him, but I don’t know what country music would’ve been had he not been there. He was the first true “superstar” in country music, and his success crossed genres and made country appealing to everyone. That is NOT just a recent phenomenon, and people need to realize that.
Also consider the number of artists he influenced, such as Gene Autry (who began his career as more or less a Jimmie Rodgers impersonator), Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, and Jim Reeves.
Barry Mazor just had a book published called “Meeting Jimmie Rodgers,” and it shows the widespread impact his songs had. Mazor interviewed people who have covered Jimmie Rodgers songs, and those people range from Dolly Parton in country to the Cramps in punk!
