what is the best way to tune a 10 string steel guitar for country music?
to play like John Huey who played for Conway Twitty
Charles the two setups for the pedal steel are E9 chromo & B6 tuning. The E9 is best for the classic sounds of Jimmy Day,John Hughey, Lloyd Green and some of the others. Buddy Emmons has used both tuning setups and mostly uses the E9 for the Ernest Tubb sound. To get help I would suggest that you do a search for Larry Bell or Jeff Newman as both of these steel guitar greats have done steel guitar instructing. I don’t know if they have a website that has what you are needing but it’s worth a try. I personally have always used the E9 due to its versitality and to get that raw country sound. When you tune E9 you will need to put a bunch of bath towels around your pedal steel to absorb the tears created by that lonesone crying sound. I don’t know what brand of strings you are using but I recommend Jagwire strings due to their heaviness and long lasting sound quality.Hope that this has helped you and “Keep On Steelin’”
