Remember John R. the DJ on WLAC radio?

He had many listeners back in the 60s. Do you remember him? Share a story if you can. He played all soul and blues, did commericials for Ernie’s and Randy’s record stores, and several other businesses. WLAC was in Nashville, TN but did not play country music.

Yes indeed!
I was living in Toronto Canada, going to high school, getting most of my beloved R&B listening from the sunrise to sunset AM soul station, 1000 watt WUFO 1080 from Buffalo NY. At night-time WLAC would come along with the other 50.000 watt far-away clear-channel stations. John R sounded like a “cracker” (please pardon the possible politically incorrect term) to my ears, and the music was good. They also were selling the records mail-order, and I remember commercials for “Corn-Huskers’ Hand Lotion”. In those days Otis Redding was a star on the station singing My Lover’s Prayer.
