Why does there seem to be a paranoia of a people that represent 12.3% of the population?
There are roughly 40 million African Americans in the country and sadly many of them live below the poverty line. Just as with the majority there are many who have made bad choices which is the reason they might be in a bad situation. However, there are so many hardworking African Americans who are just trying to feed their families and live a righteous life. I happen to be one of those. I grew up in a segregated area in lily white Iowa. I paid my own way through college and didn’t even want my parents flipping the bill when they could have. This was my future. However, I seemed to judged by the stereotypical images on T.V. and in the music. No matter how hardworking, no matter how many degrees behind my name there will be some who still consider me a N****. I don’t let that bother me though. I still keep a smile on my face and treat everyone I meet with intelligence and respect.
There will always be people who lack brains. I meet them everyday in everyway. All you can do is try to do your best and avoid them. After all, this is the only world we have. If you had an opportunity to live on another planet, then you could hope for a better class of people to deal with. But let me offer an object lesson. I lived and worked in Kuwait for two years. I found Kuwaitis who remembered the US saved them from Saddam and they treated me very well. Young people would stop me to shake my hand and thank me. Then there are those Kuwaitis who are arrogant and look down on you. To make another point, most of the manual labor is done by third country nationals (They’re called TCNs) They are treated very badly by Kuwaitis at times. Poorly paid, poorly housed, sometimes sexually abused, allowed to lose their visas, and those women are forced to prostitute. So there are some good and some very bad things there. I imagine you can find good and bad in every country on the face of the earth. In your case, just keep on keeping on. Peace.
