country music charts

How does a song climb the music charts?
I asked my local radio station to play a new single from a very well know country artist and they said that they don’t usually play a song until it reaches the charts. They said they will play it when it reaches about 35 on the charts. Well how will it get to 35 if none of the stations play it to get it there?
That depends on what kind of chart it is. If it’s an airplay chart, then either the record label needs to get a lot of requests to play it, or the record labels need to persuade (or sneakily pay) the radio stations to start playing it, to get the ball rolling. If it’s a sales chart, it’ll only work when people are buying it.
