What are some racial or ethnic stereotypes that are generally accurate?
I have always been a believer in the statement, “Just because something is a stereotype doesn’t necessarily mean it is false.” Now, before you palm-wringers, and chin-strokers start to suffer a meltdown let me clarify that I am well aware that there are exceptions to every stereotype: There ARE rednecks who did not marry a relative and have two eyes of the same color, just as their ARE black men who graduate from college, get married, start a family and stay with their wife and kids until they die. There ARE Asians who don’t understand math and their ARE Cubans in Florida who arrived there legally. There ARE whites who don’t like country music and there ARE young black athletes who can actually be understood when they speak into a microphone. I’m not talking about the these examples. I am involved in a project in a Sociology class I’m taking and we are to find out which stereotypes are more often CORRECT than not. What have been your experiences with racial stereotypes?
Just as you state that some stereotypes are accurate there are just as many, if not more, that are inaccurate. In other words, there is no validity to a stereotyping and it breeds on ignorance.
