Using music on my website – royalty free/public domain?

I want to set up some background music on my website, but with the copyright laws I have to be careful what I choose. I’d like a modern blues tune, doesn’t have to be a big name as long as its good. I know there are sites where you can get classical music performed by “amateurs” that are allowed on sites, and that a lot of the old blues is now public domain. Is somewhere I can get modern versions royalty free? Any suggestions?
Podshow seems like a good site, but I’m not podcasting yet, just looking for some background music.

There are two kinds of copyright – one on the composition, and one for the sound recording.

So, even though Beethove’s works are ublic domain (anyone can record them or use then) you can obtain a copyright for YOUR PARTICULAR recording (the one for the sound recoring) and no one ele is entitled to use it.

A lot of old blues is NOT yet in the public domain, anything before 1924 is in the public domain, and anything after will not be in the public domain for some time!

Sure, some songs after 1924 are in the public domain, but it is next to impossible to tell just which ones!

You can do a search on this and find the basics for the long and intricate listing of copyright laws and dates andsuch.

If you want to be clear, jus get the artists permission (if they ate th ones that own the work!)
