Help building classical guitar music repertoire for college audition!?!?
For an audition I need to play three works:
1. A work written before 1750 for guitar.
2. A Classical or Romantic work (including the Segovia repertoire) written for guitar.
3. A 20th or 21st- century work written for guitar.
I am auditioning for guitar. I have extensive knowledge on 20th and 21st century guitar– but know very little about classical guitar…
I am interested in the old delta blues music like Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson. I also love the old Castkill Mountain folk music, and love Jimi Hendrix, Big Brother and the Holding Co., Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead etc.) modern blues music.
For anyone well immersed in classical guitar music as well as modern day– what works for the first two song requirements would you suggest for a person with my musical interests and abilities? (I play electric blues with a focus on acoustic fingerstyle old delta blues music) Thank you so much for your suggestions!
I hope you can read music, because they will judge your sight-reading skills. Don’t worry, guitarists are notoriouly bad sight readers anyway since it’s best just to memorize. They will choose random scales.
For my audition: Any choice of studies 1–10 for the book, “25 Melodic and Progressive Studies by Matteo Carcassi born 1792.
Your choice of Fernando Sor’s Study 10, 11, or 13.
A piece of your choice.
And most difficult, which I think they just see how far you can go, was JS Bach, Suite No 1, 2nd movement, the Allemande.
This University was not concerned with 20th century works, or Segovia, since he was not a composer, just a good guitarist.
This was a prestigious school. Auditions vary, and yours could be much simpler. I want to suggest a book…”Guitar Masterpieces of the 19th Century.” It is progressive for beginners, and intermediate students.
Learn body and hand positions, very important. Takes a little getting use to.
