At what point did Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music become thought of as borderline country?

According to their biographies, they did not have any intention of being labeled a country-type band. They actually wanted to be the US’s answer to the Rolling Stones. Their music was considered hard rock in the early ’70′s before there was a term known as “Southern rock.”

I think it has more to do with the changes in country music over the past few years than it does with Skynyrd’s original music. They are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Eagles used to be considered hard rock as well (also in the Hall of Fame) and now they are performing at country music award shows. My Mom is 80 and she was watching it – I talked to her on the phone – she said “Have you ever heard of The Eagles? I’m watching this country music award show and they are the best thing on it!” I was like, wow! haha. I kind of grew up on The Eagles and Skynyrd. They will both always be rock to me, but I haven’t heard any of the Eagles newer stuff.

Edit: Thanks, Floyd. Guess I was right to stay far away from it, then!
